Birth certificate authentication for overseas use

Birth Certificate Attestation & Apostille

A birth certificate may be needed for dependent, family, school or civil-registration purposes abroad. We first check the issuing authority, certificate format and destination requirement.

Civil documents

The certificate should be checked before authentication starts

Birth certificates can vary considerably in age, format and issuing authority. Older municipal records, digitally issued certificates and documents with name variations may not all be handled in exactly the same way.

We review the certificate and destination requirement first. If the document is suitable, we explain the State-level authentication and later Apostille or legalisation steps that may apply.

Worth checking first: Check the child/applicant name, parents’ names and date of birth against current passports before starting the process.

How we handle the enquiry

How we handle a birth certificate enquiry

We establish whether the certificate itself is ready before planning authentication.

  1. 1
    Review the certificate

Issuer, State, registration details and document clarity are checked.

  2. 2
    Compare identity details

Names and dates are compared with current passport or supporting records where relevant.

  3. 3
    Complete pre-authentication

The appropriate State/UT authentication route is followed where required.

  4. 4
    Proceed to overseas authentication

Apostille or further legalisation is completed according to the destination.

Questions we are often asked

Birth certificate attestation questions

Can an old birth certificate be apostilled?

Possibly, depending on the issuing authority, document condition and authentication requirements. We review the certificate first.

Does a school admission abroad always need an apostilled birth certificate?

Not always. The school or education authority should specify whether authentication is required and in what form.

What if the certificate has a spelling difference?

Raise it before authentication. A correction or supporting document may be advisable depending on the receiving authority.
